"To Hem Or Not To Hem"

We now use special banner material that can be digitally printed on. This is much different than the old style pre made banners that many shops still offer. They use a tarp type material than needs to be hemmed and sewn or it will fray at the edges. This material will not last long in the sun and UV conditions.

The banner material we use is more like the vinyl on a car seat. It has cloth support in the center but it is smooth coated with vinyl or PVC. This allows us to print on it, cut a clean edge and pull it tight without stretching.

Our banners are hemmed using a double side tape that is super strong and doubles the thickness of the material for the grommets to hold. This adds more strength but the hem will add some wrinkling along the edges if they are rolled up a lot for storage.

Instead of using grommets we can use plastic clips that work like a Chinese finger clamp ( The tighter you pull the harder it grips) But you need to be able to have tension on the mounts using a spring or bungee cord. The advantage with the removable clips is that they allow you to roll the banners back up on a roll perfectly flat during storage so when you mount them again there are no wrinkles at all.

We also have corner tabs that are stuck on with adhesive. They come in white or clear so you can see through for digital prints. They roll up better than a hemmed banner but the ends are not removable.

Neither of the clip methods needs to be hemmed. When you pull the banner tight it will not stretch, sag or have any wrinkles that a hem has. The edge will be sharp and clean.

Samples

This banner uses a hem at the top only because it is used in places that may not be able to pull it tight

The rope runs through the hem and it is stretched across like on a clothesline.

The disadvantage is the wrinkles along the hem line.

This banner has no hem on the sides

The top is hemmed with a rod to support the clips for hanging.

As you can see the edges are clean and it hangs straight.

The banner rolls up perfectly flat because the clips are removable.
